Murals
About The Murals
CLNEP was founded based on a set of murals located at Ellis Tanner Trading
Company in Gallup, New Mexico.
Ellis Tanner, a fourth generation trader, and founder of CLNEP, commissioned
Navajo artist Chester Kahn to paint murals of prominent Navajos on the walls of
his trading post.
The mural project was started in 1994 and completed in 2000. There are a total of
sixty-four murals. Fifty-nine of them average 3 feet by 5 feet and portray prominent
Navajo people of the 20/21st century.
Three of the murals average 3 feet by 15 feet and depict events of importance to
the Navajo people.
Following the completion of the mural project, Mr. Tanner established the Circle of
Light Navajo Educational project to carry on the idea of inspiring Navajo youth to
pursue their dreams and take pride in their heritage, and to educate them along
with non-Navajos about the positive contributions and culture of the Navajo
people.
